The Responsibility to Talk about the Responsibility to Protect

Roughly five years after it was presented to the world, the brilliant idea of a responsiblity to protect rather than a right to intervene, is beginning to attract a suitable amount of attention. Since last year, "The Responsibility to Protect" is now, in writing, a part of the UN. In the last summit they finally incorporated the principle in a top notch UN document. About time I'd say. So, is it going to die on the altar of dashing slogans, however hollow, or come to change the international system entirely? Only time can tell. Call me a cynic but I believe in the potential changes only when I see it. My head spins when I speculate on all potential consequences of a thouroghly implemented R2P. It is my hope that this principle will help the UN, countries and leaders to stop massive crimes against humanity and the worst crime of all: genocide.
