Before Summer Has Moved On

In a month or so, summer has moved on. To prepare oneself, one can always listen to a great song.

Yes. Here is even more of that Norwegian band. This is a video clip of the song that made them reunite back in last years of the previous millenium. "Summer Moved On" was, as all you a-ha afficionados already know so well, written specifically for a performance at the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize Concert in Oslo. In the year 2000 the song was turned into the bands first single from their "new" album "Minor Earth Major Sky". By then the German producers had blip-blopped the song back and forth a bit and lost some of the magic moments from this beautiful live performance.

I managed to download an audio version of the live performance in just under three hours back in the old days of 100 megahertz computers and tragically slow modems. I had no idea of what an mp3-file was. The computer broke down and the song was lost. Shortly after this incident the song was taken off the internet by a-ha's record company. They were about to launch a new web site and not very keen on having various sorts of downloads littering the net here and there.

Happiness: A Question of Geography

BBC News reports that scientist Adrian White from the University of Leicester has published the first map of world happiness. Apparently the happiest people in the world lives in Denmark and Switzerland. The most miserable ones are found in Zimbabwe and Burundi.

According to BBC News, Mr White, an analytic social psychologist, suggests that: "When people are asked if they are happy with their lives, people in countries with good healthcare, a higher GDP [gross domestic product] per captia, and access to education were much more likely to report being happy."

Chris Cornell Will Sing New Bond Theme

Rumours have it that Cornell, Chris Cornell will sing the theme song in the coming brand new Bond outing next year (Casino Royale). Apparently the information comes from a Finnish newspaper(!). I don't know why a Finnish paper is the main source. I can't think of any other occassion where the world has been relying on fresh info from Finland?! Hmmm... anyway, I just luuuurv the choice of singer and composer. If Mr. Cornell of Soundgarden and Audioslave fame is the actual choice, he is furthermore the first male performer since.... tadaaa... my favorite Norwegian wizards of beautiful and bittersweet sweeping melodramatic pop music penned and performed the better than average song from 1987 "The Living Daylights". The first of two Bond movies with Britton Timothy Dalton in the lead role. He got a bit of a bashing for his performance poor old Tim. Completely unfair if you ask me.

Diet Coke and Mentos Mayhem

"What happens when you combine 200 liters of Diet Coke and over 500 Mentos mints? It's amazing and completely insane?" Answer? You smiiiiiile...

This video kicked off in an instance and became an internet phenonomen in a matter of days. I know I'm late in posting it, but it's so much fun that I just HAVE to post it on my blog. The Motion Keeps My Heart Running: The Perfect Nike Or Adidas TV Commercial

I don't know why, but suddenly it struck me. The last half minute or so of pop group Keane's song "Can't Stop Me Know" would be perfect for a Nike och Adidas TV-commercial. These 35-40 seconds (from 2m 54s and onwards) are so much better than the rest of the song, and the words (see below*) that Tom Chaplin is singing is, when you think of it, completely hand crafted for a sports garment company. I already see a cool video with suitably healthy and good looking people running, playing football, skiing, walking, swimming, playing golf or whatever. And I see the words from the song slowly floating over the moving pictures...

However, neither Nike nor Adidas seems to be particularly interested in people drowning them with all sorts of weird ideas. Nike declines all non-patented ideas. Adidas has a contact person who probably works as a anti-weirdness filter. Well, well. Maybe I'll look into it further someday.

Young Men, Small Arms, Unfinished Business

Fresh out of the printhouse and still smoking (sorry, really bad joke) the annual Small Arms Survey is here. The survey firmly establish what some of you didn't know/already suspected/already knew (depending on where in the world that you live): young men really loooove guns.

Did you know that:

• Young men represent a disproportionately high share of the perpetrators and victims of gun-related, lethal violence.
• Boys are two to three times more likely than girls to get involved in fighting.
• Young men—those aged 15 to 29—account for half of the world’s firearm homicide victims, or 70,000 to 100,000 deaths
annually.
• Curbing young men’s access to firearms has proved an effective component of short-term strategies to reduce the number of
deaths arising from youth violence.
• Countering socially constructed associations between guns, violence, power, and masculinity is a key component of any effective,
long-term violence prevention strategy.
• Men suffer more than 90 per cent of all gun deaths in Colombia. More than one-third of all firearm deaths are concentrated
among men aged 20–29, with more than 342,000 years of productive life lost from firearm deaths since 1979.

På drift i Tokyo - en mopedists bekännelser

Fredrik Strage har i Dagens Nyheter kortrecenserat den tredje filmen i The Fast and the Furious-serien (T.F.a.t.F.: Tokyo Drift) med följande mycket komiska rader:

"Vill du se unga idioter handbromssladda i japanska parkeringshus? Då är det här filmen för dig. Sean (Lucas Black) flyttar till Tokyo och kommer i kontakt med lokala streetracingkretsar, muckar med Yakuzan och lär sig "drifta", sladda med bilen. Filmen är obetydligt mer underhållande än det var att titta på killarna i högstadiet som börnade grus med sina mopeder."

Min enda invändning mot Strages recension rör den fjärde och sista meningen.

Givet att jag var en av de högstadiekillar som gillade att börna grus, så ifrågasätter jag att filmen i fråga skulle vara mer - om än obetydligt i Strages tycke - underhållande än att förflytta grus med en mopeds bakdäck. Det senare är ju som alla vet oerhört roligt och definitivt mycket roligare än en film om unga idioter som handbromssladdar i japanska parkeringshus. Om Strage haft samma mopedupplevelser som jag och tusentals andra tonåringar så hade hans recension sett annorlunda ut vill jag påstå. Då hade även han tyckt att det var roligt att titta på när andra börnade - om än inte alls lika roligt som att börna själv.

Grus var som sagt ett roligt underlag, men jag föredrog ändå att börna på blött gräs. Det var både lättare och roligare. Det blev mitt trademark (i hemlighet). Tänk om mina föräldrar fått veta då att det var jag som under några intensiva dagar förstörde nästan varenda offentlig gräsplätt i och runt omkring mitt barndoms bostadsområde. Jag blev lite skärrad när några av grannarna stod och beklagade sig över "den där förbannade mopedisten". Otroligt nog var det ingen som såg mig.

Men en kväll blev jag iakttagen av några hundrastande pensionärer som i vredesmod kastade sten på mig (tur att jag hade hjälm!) när jag i djup koncentration petat i tvåans växel på min orangea Zündapp KS50 och med båda fötterna på marken lät detta "monster" glida iväg i vackra och kontrollerade sladdar över den regnstänkta slänten nedanför kommunens stora idrottsanläggning. Det var vackert, så oerhört vackert. Men efteråt såg det förstås för djävligt ut och stenkastarincidenten blev en avgörande tankeställare för mig. Det blev inga fler gräsövningar. Snyft...

Dokument Svensson Svensson vs. Dokument utifrån

Dokumentärfilmare och professor Peå Holmquist skriver i dagens Dagens Nyheters kulturbilaga om "Livet efter 'Dokument utifrån'". Jag är lika bedrövad som Holmquist över SVT:s beslut att att dra ned på nyhetsverksamheten med 30 miljoner kronor till förmån för dramaserier av Svensson, Svensson-typen. Det är verkligen helt galet.

Utöver behovet av utåtblickande analysprogram i globaliseringens tidevarv anför Holmquist också ekonomiska skäl som talar till Dokument utifråns fördel: merparten av programinslagen är utlandsproducerade och köps in av SVT för en ringa summa. För mig är det två flugor i en smäll: dels får vi ett annat perspektiv än det svenska - vilket kan vara bra. Dels minskar risken för svenskproducerade partsinlagor av mer eller mindre knallröda filmare/journalister.

Harry Schein skulle ha behövts här. Kunde man anmäla Åsa-Nisse som ett exempel på att statstelevisionen inte lever upp till sina syften, torde man väl också kunna protestera medelst en anmälan för det beslut som SVT:s ledning fattat angående Dokument utifrån.

Jag undrar om jag inte ska ta och göra det själv.... hmmm... jag måste kolla upp det här lite tror jag. Kanske någon har gjort det redan?!
